Methoxyflurane (Penthrox) Training for Dental and Podiatry Industry

A recent draft guideline released by the dental board of Australia cleared the way for the use of methoxyflurane as an inhaled analgesic. Training Aid Australia will be conducting these courses nationally for the dental and podiatry industry in the administration of methoxyflurane (Penthrox) throughout 2012.

Penthrox can be used for the following in the dental practice

Initial Examination

  • Patients in pain
  • Emergency Situations

Pre injection analgesic

  • Prior to the administration of local anaesthetic

During uncomfortable procedures that may cause patients pain

  • Removal of temporary crowns or bridges
  • Hand scaling and root planing
  • Ultrasonic scaling
  • Taking of impression or radiographs in gaggers
  • Extractions
  • Placement of rubber dam clamps
  • Suture removal
  • Fitting and adjusting of immediate dentures
  • Incision and drainage of abscesses
  • Placement of implants
  • Management of dry socket
